TEHRAN (IQNA) – At least 43 Iranian pilgrims were injured in a fire at a hotel in the holy city of Najaf, Iraq.

The fire broke out at al-Qabtan Hotel in the old city of Najaf early on Tuesday, the civil defense department of Najaf Province said in a statement.

A number of Iranian pilgrims were at the hotel at the time of the incident, it said, adding that 43 pilgrims were injured.

The department said firefighters are containing the blaze.

It went on to say that the fire was caused by a short circuit.

The holy city of Najaf is home to the holy shrine of Imam Ali (AS), the first Shia Imam.

Every year, millions of pilgrims from all over Iraq and other countries, including Iran, travel to the city to visit the holy shrine.
