According to Qaaf news agency, the shrine of Maytham Al-Tammar hosted the competition on February 15.

It was held by the National Center for Quranic Sciences affiliated to the Awqaf Office of Iraqi Shia Muslims in cooperation with the custodianship of the holy shrine.

25 visually-impaired Quran memorizers and reciters from different parts of the country participated in the competition.

The winners, who will represent Iraq in international Quranic events, were awarded in a ceremony at the end of the competition.

Maytham al-Tammar al-Asadi al-Kufi (d. 60/692) was a devout and loyal companion of Imam Ali (AS). After the martyrdom of Imam Ali (AS), Maytham became a devout companion of Imam Hassan (AS) and Imam Hussein (AS). He received great spiritual knowledge from the Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).

Quranic activities have significantly developed in Iraq since the 2003 overthrow of former dictator Saddam Hussein.

There has been a growing trend of Quranic programs such as competitions, recitation sessions and educational programs held in the country in recent years.
