TEHRAN (IQNA) –  A seminar titled “The Impact of Extremism in Asia” was held at the National University of Malaysia (UKM) on Tuesday.

It was jointly organized by the Iranian embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Asia West East Institute (AsiaWE) and the university’s center for world studies (IKHMAS).

Addressing the event, Iranian Cultural Attaché in Malaysia Ali Mohammad Sabeqi highlighted the broad sense of moderation in the history of Islam, saying different Muslim schools have their own understanding of the concept.

He referred to verse 143 of the Holy Quran’s Surah al-Baqara “We have made you (true Muslims) a moderate nation so that you could be an example for all people and the Prophet an example for you…,” and said this moderation involves all aspects of Muslims’ life.

He added that moderation is walking on the right path based on the example set by the Holy prophet (PBUH) of Islam.

Sabeqi also underlined that extremism is condemned in Islam, calling on Muslim scholars and thinkers to help Muslim youths in finding the correct path based on Islamic criteria in the current turbulent times.

Also speaking at the seminar was Professor Syed Farid Alatas, a Malaysian author and educator, serving as a professor in the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore.

He said extremism can emerge in every society and religion and harm the society.

According to Alatas, extremism in some Muslim countries can be mostly attributed to reactions to extremism in other countries and societies.
