TEHRAN (IQNA) – A spokesman for Iraq’s al-Nujaba Movement, a major Shia resistance group, called on Arab countries to take a stance against Western powers’ aggression on Syria.

Sayyed Hashim al-Mousawi described Saturday missile attacks on Syria by the US, the UK and France as an act of stupidity.

He said the US does not want to see restoration of security and stability to Syria and is rather seeking to occupy the Arab country and plunder its assets.

Mousawi further urged leaders of Arab and Muslim countries to stand up against such acts of aggression and unequivocally condemn it.

The US, Britain and France launched airstrikes on Saturday against Syrian research, storage and military targets under the pretext of a suspected chemical attack near Damascus last weekend that killed more than 40 people.

This is while Syria turned over its entire chemical stockpile under a deal negotiated by Russia and the United States back in 2013.

Washington, London and Paris said their aggression was in response to last week's alleged chemical attack in the Damascus suburb town of Douma, which they blamed on the Damascus government.

Syrian air defenses, however, managed to shoot down most of the missiles fired at the country.

Syria's Foreign Ministry strongly denounced Saturday’s strikes as a “brutal, barbaric aggression,” saying it violated international law and the UN Charter.

The illegal air raids also sparked a wave of condemnations from a number of countries, including Iran, Russia and Iraq.
