TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Shia mosque in Baku, the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was reopened in a ceremony attended by the country’s Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva.

According to Azertaj news website, the ceremony for reopening the Imam Hussein (AS) Mosque was held on Tuesday.

Hajj Abdul, the prayer leader of the mosque, talked about the history of the place of worship, saying it was built in 1890 by a benevolent person named Hajji Baalaa.

After communists came to power and created the USSR, the mosque was shot down for years, he said, adding that following the collapse of the Soviet Union and independence of Azerbaijan, restoring the old mosque was put on agenda and began in earnest in 2017.

The mosque is 300 square meters in area and can accommodate 400 worshippers.

The Republic of Azerbaijan is a country in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia.

More than 95 percent of the country’s population is Muslim, the majority of them Shia.
