TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Quran and Etrat Academy for Women in Pakistan’s Punjab Province plans to organize a ceremony to commemorate Imam Khomeini (AS).

Meeting of the academy’s president Sakina Mahdavi and head of the culture house Jafar Ronas

The event will be held in cooperation with the Iranian Culture House in Lahore on the 33rd anniversary of the demise of the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The issue was discussed in a recent meeting of the academy’s president Sakina Mahdavi and head of the culture house Jafar Ronas.

At the meeting, Mahdavi also referred to the academy’s Quranic activities, saying it organizes Quran classes for women and girls in 23 areas of Lahore.

She noted that during the holy month of Ramadan, it held Itikaf (religious retreat) rituals with the participation of 300 girls.

Ronas hailed the academy’s programs and activities in promotion of Quranic and Islamic teachings and its contributions to the development of ties between Iran and Pakistan.

He also stressed the need for unity in the Islamic world in order to tackle the crisis the Muslim world is facing today.

Later in the meeting, the two sides discussed coordination for holding the program on anniversary of Imam Khomeini’s demise.

Grand Ayatollah Seyed Rouhollah Mousavi Khomeini, better known as Imam Khomeini, passed away on June 3, 1989 at the age of 87.

As an anti-imperialist icon, he devoted his life to standing up to Iran's former Pahlavi monarchy, a key ally of the United States, and eventually paved the way for the regime’s downfall in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

He spent many years in exile in Iraq, Turkey and France, from where he led a swelling grassroots movement, which ultimately put an end to millennia of monarchical rule in Iran.

He came back home on February 1, 1979 after the Shah fled the country amid angry popular demonstrations. The Pahlavi regime fully collapsed 10 days later on February 11.
