TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 17th edition of Algeria’s international competition on memorization of the Quran will be held virtually.

Algeria Quran contest

The country’s Awqaf and religious affairs ministry said the decision has been made because the coronavirus pandemic has made it impossible for the ministry to hold the contest in person.

Wa Rattil al-Quran Tartila (referring to verse 4 of Surah a-Muzmmil that orders reciting the Quran in Tarteel) is the motto of this year’s edition.

It is slated to be held on February 17-19 in the capital Algiers.

Quran experts from Algeria and a number of other Islamic countries will form the panel of judges.

Contenders in the competition, known as Algeria international Quran award, need to be memorizers of the entire Quran aged below 25 years.

Those winning the first to third ranks in previous edition are not eligible to take part in the contest again.

Algeria began a national competition on January 10 to select the country’s representative in the international Quranic event.

Algeria is a country in North Africa. Muslims make up about ninety-nine percent of the country’s population.
