Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr

This is according to Hojat-ol-Islam Seyyed Omid Moazzeni, deputy head of research affairs at Martyr Sadr Research Institute in Tehran. He made the remarks in a session held on Quran interpretations of the great Iraqi philosopher. Here is a summary of his remarks:

Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr was born on March 1, 1935, in al-Kadhimiya, Iraq. He engaged in Islamic studies at an early age and managed to publish a 20-volume book Ghayat al-Fikr (The Highest Degree of Thought) when he was only 20. Although only one volume of the book remains now.

Quran’s presence in Sadr’s works

The bond between the genius and the Quran was so that the spirit of the Holy Quran can be witnessed in all of Sadr’s works.

In a titled Falsafatuna (Our Philosophy), the scholar discusses social aspects with a view on the Quran and in another book titled Iqtisaduna (Our Economy), he uses Quranic verses to offer an economic theory based on jurisprudence.

He had specific works on Quran interpretation. He has published articles about aspects of good deeds and freedom in the Quran. He also refers to Quranic concepts and issues when elaborating on the foundations of the Islamic Dawa Party that he founded in Iraq.

Educational transformation in seminary

Martyr Sadr had plans for the curriculum of seminary schools. One of the measures was co-writing a book titled Olum al-Quran (sciences of the Quran) along with Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim which was later used as a textbook in seminaries.

One of the concerns of Martyr Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr was the writing of a brief and general interpretation of the Quran based on narrations. He planned the framework and tasked two of his students, including Ayatollah Taskhiri, to work on it. It was published years later under the title of Tafsir Mobin.

Social evolution in thematic interpretation

Thematic interpretation is among the latest achievements of the Shia scholar. The Quranic interpretation has been formed in a special political and social context. His work in this area consists of 14 lessons which were later turned into a book.

The thematic interpretation was written according to the needs of the Islamic society at the time and offered solutions for problems.

The work talks about the logic of social evolution. This logic is different from the one that he designed for his party. Accordingly, this can be the result of the Islamic Revolution on his thoughts or his efforts to theorize the viewpoints of Imam Khomeini.
