Cleaning the places of worship is carried out every year before Ramadan but this year the campaign has been launched sooner than usual, Egypt Today reported.

Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mukhtar Gomaa has ordered related bodies in all governorates of the country to start the cleaning of thousands of mosques.

As part of the campaign, a delegation led by Khaled Salaheddin, head of the religious affairs department of Cairo, visited the cleaning operations in Al-Sayyidah Nafisa Mosque in the city.

Hisham Abdul Aziz Ali, head of the Awqaf ministry’s religious affairs department, said mosques should be the symbol of beauty and cleanliness and working to clean the places of worship is following the path of the Sahabah (companions of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)).

He also highlighted verse 108 of Surah At-Tawbah of the Holy Quran in which God says: “You shall never stand there. A mosque founded upon piety from the first day is worthier for you to stand in. In it are men who love to purify themselves. Allah loves those who purify themselves.”

The Islamic fasting month of Ramadan will begin on March 23 this year.
