“Mujahid Muhammad is the first known Muslim to be appointed to the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners. We congratulate him on his historic appointment,” the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) wrote on Facebook.

Muhammad is a licensed master social worker and a mental health clinician with 20 years of leadership experience and over 10 years of public service.

“Congratulations to Mujahid Muhammad on being sworn in today to serve as the first known Muslim appointed to Baltimore City Public Schools’ Board of School Commissioners,” American Muslim civil rights and political activist Zainab Chaudry wrote on Facebook.

“Witnessed this historic moment today thinking of all our students who deserve committed, disciplined leadership. Your success in this role is all their success.”

His appointment was declared in May in a press release by Mayor Brandon M. Scott.

“I am thrilled to have Mujahid Muhammed join our Board of School Commissioners. Mr. Muhammad has a wealth of experience in leadership, social work, mental health and public service and a heart for helping our youth,” said Mayor Brandon M. Scott.

“I am confident that his background and his skills will be an asset to this Board.”

Muhammad has mentored hundreds of children, provided clinical treatment, partnered with multiple schools, and brought programming to communities throughout Maryland.

His commitment to the success of young people in the City of Baltimore includes not only academics as a priority but also community engagement and mental health services, making him a vital contributor to the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners.
