IQNA – A new digital system for visiting the Rawdah Al-Sharif at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina has been launched by Saudi Arabia that uses digital technologies and requires visitors to scan barcodes at automated gates for entry.

Visitors need to use the Nusuk platform to start their Rawdah visit procedures. The platform offers guidance in multiple languages and confirms appointments through the application. Visitors also get reminders 24 hours before their visit and can confirm or cancel their appointment. The barcode for entry is only valid at the scheduled time of the visit, Saudi media outlets reported on Friday.

When visitors arrive at the Prophet’s Mosque, they are guided by screens to the assigned entrances. Staff members help them through the visit stages, including scanning barcodes at automated gates before entering the Rawdah Sharif. There are special pathways for people with special needs and the opening areas are adjusted according to the capacity of the Rawdah Sharif.

The visitation process aims to be educational and comfortable. Electronic screens in multiple languages explain the etiquette of visiting and there are waiting areas for visitor comfort. Visitors follow organised paths to the Rawdah Sharif and exit after their visit.

A digital system, with smart cameras and sensors, monitors the flow of visitors. The system tracks entry and exit patterns and visitor numbers with interactive thermal and geographical maps. Control rooms manage crowd control and digital systems and coordinate with all parties involved. The system is said to try to provide fast solutions for overcrowding and improve service quality through regular reporting.

The Prophet’s Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) in Medina houses Al-Rawda Al-Sharifa where the tomb of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is located.

After undertaking the Umrah rites at the Grand Mosque, Islam’s holiest site in Mecca, many pilgrims would flock to the Prophet’s Mosque to pray and visit Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifa.
